History
Pertevniyal Valide Sultan, who was of Circassian descent, was the wife of Sultan Mahmud II and the mother of Sultan Abdülaziz. She took the title of “Valide Sultan” when her son Abdülaziz ascended the throne. Known for her charitable personality, Pertevniyal Valide Sultan had a complex built in Aksaray, Istanbul, bearing her name. This complex consists of a mosque, madrasa, school, timekeeping house (muvakkithane), library, police station, and tomb.
Valide Sultan owned numerous lands, shops, and hospitals belonging to her foundation not only in the inner and outer districts of Istanbul, but also in various cities in Anatolia and the Balkans, as well as in Mecca and Medina.
The tomb of Pertevniyal Valide Sultan was slightly moved back during the tramway construction works carried out between 1926 and 1929. It was completely demolished in 1958. Her remains were kept at Topkapı Palace for a time before being buried beneath the sultan's sarcophagus in the tomb of Sultan Mahmud II. Later, with the reconstruction of the tomb, her remains were transferred back to their original location.
